With all the talk of 'catfish' in the news recently, I thought I would share some of my catfishing experiences.

When I was growing up my Dad would make my brother and I go hand fishing with him. You feel along the bank for holes UNDER THE WATER. When you find the hole you block it and reach in the other hole and grab the catfish...or he grabs you, either way you catch him. Don't worry about the snakes swimming by but if you reach in a hole and it goes above the water GET OUT. It could be a snake. this is NOT a tradition I have continued with my kids.

It looks as if you were jug fishing. I didn't know catfish grew to that size in Va. My favorite fish.

What kind?

Thanks for sharing.

Nice bait.
Seriously, a fine collection there. Even if you were jugging, they must have been fun dragging them into the boat. My personal favorite is the 2 - 4 pounders for eating. Those big ones just get lazy and fat it seems or at lest the ones here do. We sell those to the markets for other people and restaurants.

All were caught on rod and reel and all were released. I would not eat anything from this river - too many chemicals and consumption advisories.

These are flatheads and blues. Mouse over the pics for more details.

The orange ball in the first pic is not a jug. It is a 15.5" buoy attached to a one way slide and is an anchor lifter. Best money I have spent on a fishing related item. No more sore arms and back from pulling the anchor - the buoy floats the anchor to the top of the water.
