I too was thinking of getting one also just slightly larger but I have no window to vent hose out. Got to figure some thing out. It's just to hot in the garage to work.

We have the HVAC guys coming over next Friday to put one in for the whole house. The radiator portion is already in the furnace plenum so it should go quick. Since my shop is attached to the house above the garage if I want to cool it a little I'll just have to open the door into the house and maybe put a fan in the door to nudge some of the cool in. Won't take much as the shop is well insulated and tight. The big job now is putting a concrete pad on the slope beside the garage for the condenser or whatever the outdoor part is called and it is very hot right now. In the high 80's, low 90's. Sweat now to chill later. 😅 You'll enjoy the portable.😉

Same here as to no window in the garage. Thought about buying a window unit and setting it on a furniture dolly and raise the door, then block off the rest of the opening. That's what I am doing with the portable unit at the moment though it does leave the gap at the top open. I am thinking about making a board to fit the window in the storm door that exits to the back, leave enough slack so if one of the kids goes out it will still swing open enough. All I know know is it's much better out there!

I wonder whether the first month's electric bill will exceed the cost of the AC unit itself.

No window or side door in the garage and was thinking of doing the same thing you did. Hose to bottom of garage door and block off the rest of the opening. And who cares about electrical cost to run AC when I have 72 solar panels in my back yard!!!! Most of my year doesn't cost me anything throughout the year.

I don't have quite the temps you guys in SAT or OKC have, but I use a 20" box fan built into a frame work and set on a 4' tall 4x4 that I can set behind me at the lathe... works for me.
I have three fans that I run kinda in a circle in the garage. I would hang the box fan on the back door in the middle to either bring air in or turn it out depending on which way air was moving. I work in a non-a/c shop so kind of used to it, but as I get older it's not near as fun 😁

I've been saving up to get a shop just for turning, and now that I have my goal met the lumber prices shot up and aren't expected to come down for a few years. Congrats on your purchase. I am truly envious. 😆🤣

I bought a freestanding 9K portable air unit that was made to exhaust out of the window through a plastic spacer thing. As most here also found, no windows in my garage, Instead, I got a 5", 90 degree bathroom fan vent that goes through the wall at the big box store for roughly $30. The aluminum vent has a flapper and screen to keep out critters and seal the hole when not in use. I cut the hole with a hand scroll saw without issue through both the wood sheathing and vinyl siding. Piped it to the AC using the provided flex pipe that came with the AC. Works like a champ! Best part is it just looks like a dryer vent to passersby, whereas cutting a full size AC into the wall would not have looked so good, as the garage wall faces a public side of the house.

My step son accused me of being part lizard... I don't mind the heat as long as the air is moving... I can't breath still air when it's really hot.
