Hello all
I went back to my Ortho doctor this morning. And he said that he felt it was time to do surgery to try a correct the problem with my foot. He is sure it's Tarsel Tunnel syndrome. He feels that it should eliminate the pain. It done outpatient I will have to stay off my foot for 3 to 4 weeks and I can use a walking boot for another 2 to 3 months. It looks like I'll be off work for most if not all that time. I have no idea what I'm going to do for that first 4 weeks but it wont be any shop time I can deal with that I guess. I guess what will be the hardest is ot working for 3 months and not having that income to help with the bills. I kind of feelletting lett Evelyn down, I know I'm not it's just how I feel. How I sure most of you remember what happened last time I was laid up and the nutty post I did. Well I hope you wont mint having a few more. I'll be having the surgery in about 6 weeks. Please keep us in your prayers. Maybe in a few day I wont feel so undone. Thanks for taking the time to read.this and for your prayer.

Good luck with the surgery. A second opinion is always a good idea.

Spend the next few weeks turning several pens but don't assemble. Save assembling for post - surgery when boredom raises it's ugly head.
Do a good turn daily!
Don

John; this is the first Ortho doc that knows what is causing the pain. There no alternative other then living with the pain and the longer I wait say another year or two the surgery may not work as well. So it's best to have it done.

My thought is to teach Evelyn to turn!

Remember the words "in sickness AND in health"? I have at various times been laid up from minor surgery and my wife is just about recovered from a severely broken arm. I will take good care of her.

best of luck with the surgery, naturally you are in our prayers.

Just think of all the episodes of 'The View, The Talk and Dr. Oz' you can watch.

I'll be praying for you Dan.

Maybe some of us could turn some blanks to your specifications and you can assemble them just to keep busy. It could be a contest judged by Evelyn. Then put them all up for sale on this site to allow us to help you get thru this.

Anybody else wanna do this?

I love contests!

Dan - I am going to pray for you and Evelyn, even if I don't win the contest - just sayin'

That's why we have 3 hobbies!! Do what you're told unless you have an MD on the wall we don't know about. Time and patience are all you need.

Sounds like FUN! I'm in for a few!!!

Thank everyone for the replies and prayers. The contest idea sounds interesting. I need a dag or two to really let all of this sink in. I guess I was hoping he was going to say something other then surgery. Harry you can never tell who might win I've heard of judges taking....would you like me to pm my address.

Thank youso very much for the kind works and prayers. I do have a few kits in my inventory. Some Cigar, Slimline, European, Trimline, Barons. I still need to give the contest some though and also my sure something like this will be ok with Jeff. I also have no idea on how the selling part would work. I needva bit of time to think about everything. I really a bit....no really over whelmed...in cant wrap my head around being off for another three months... I wont be doing anything I the shop for a while, it just not safe tobe around power tools. I think the contest is an awesome idea and I'm sure Evelyn would like to be a judge. And I sure that she would be fair....but monetary incentives (bribes is such an ugley word) might help.
God's word says he will not put more on us the we are able to bare, I'm sure thats true but my faith is a bit weak right now.

Ok folks if there is a contest there should be away to judge the pen/pens without Evelyn or I knowing who turned the blank. Any ideas no how this could be done? Next how many entrys per person? Is this something Jeff will allow do be done using this forum, what I guess I'm getting at is the idea of this contest is in the end make some money for me. I just want to be sure we don't violate any IAP rules. If this is allowed who sets the price or should it be done for bids. I think it would be fun and it would give me something to do. But if not I could post something like this........I'm so upset I realized to day our house has no curb appeal what so ever...ever.:frown:...How can this be you might ask......well our street has no curbs.

The contest sounds like fun.

Dan, being out of the shop is a pain but then that gives you time to study other ideas. Also, how about going around to see other turners shops? Maybe pick up an idea or two that way also? One thing to also think of......Go to the local library and look into some books about other turning ideas. We make pens here. But there are so many things that the lathe can help make. Maybe look at some of those things for the future?
You and your family will be in our prayers. Keeping our fingers crossed that the surgery is a success. Hope that time passes fast for you and that you are bck turning soon.

I'm in for slim lines...kinda what I like to turn

About the proposed "Contest"

The generosity of the IAP community never ceases to amaze me. Most members have no idea how many requests we receive for some sort of support for members in need of something. We get so many, in fact, that we decided long ago that there would be no fund raising on the IAP site for anything other than site support. We have had to turn down requests for many, many honorable and legitimate causes, which is a shame but necessary to maintain the type of environment we desire on the IAP. Until we can develop some means of separating the wheat from the chaff the current rule will remain in effect.

A "contest" designed to provide Dan with turned barrels which would be assembled into pens and later sold is a fund raiser and will not be allowed to occur on the IAP. IAP management agrees that we do not want the IAP to turn into a site where there are constant, unregulated appeals for money. The IAP hs allowed fundraising events to be announced on the IAP, but the actual fundraising has to occur off site.

Here is what CAN be done. Requests for blanks, kits, or other pen making materials are often posted in the Deals, Trades, Gifts and Wants forum of the IAP Market Place. If Dan wants to make a request for turned pen barrels in that forum that would be acceptable under the current rules. Members are free to respond or not as they so choose.

If Dan wants to provide one or more of the donors with something in return for the turned barrels he is entitled to do so. What he provides and/or how he decides who should receive something is up to him. None of that decision making process can take place on the IAP.

There can be no "Contest" for this purpose on the IAP. No polls or voting will be allowed.

If Dan chooses to sell the pens that he creates from the turned barrels he receives he may attempt to do so in the Classifieds forum of the IAP Market Place. Personally, I don't know how successful that would be but if someone wants to try to sell pens to pen makers through the classifieds that is not violating any rules. Personally I think a better option is eBay or Etsy.

As always, feel free to contact me with any questions or concerns about the current fund raising rules or anything related to IAP Activities.

Thanks,
Mike

That all makes sense to me.

Dan I could see putting the pens on eBay or something along those lines. Whoevers pens bring the highest amount wins. You can post the link up on the classified thread and still get the draw from some outsiders through eBay maybe. As far as not knowing who's pen is which they could all be mailed to a turner in your area and they open the boxes and get them to you?

And don't think the curb appeal joke slipped by......sounds like you are getting back to abnormal in no time  Keep your head up, don't beat yourself up over something you can't control/change.

Dan,

I'm somewhat familiar with this, having had plantar fasciitis and having a case of carpal tunnel syndrome. I'm all about finding non-surgical options for treatments.

Plantar fasciitis is often associated with tarsal tunnel syndrome, and treatments can be similar. I went through two boughts of plantar fasciitis. The first time, I was running a lot of miles a week, and it brought me to a complete stop for over 6 months. It finally healed through rest. The 2nd time, 5 years later, I got it in the other foot. A buddy of mine from the gym told me about something called "Graston Technique", which is a method involving manipulation of tissues to promote regeneration of healthy cells.

It worked amazingly well. Within 3 weeks, I was running again. Look it up, you can find certified practictioners in your are (often times, but not always, Chiropractors.)

I mention it because it can also sometimes be used to successfully treat tarsal tunnel syndrome.

Don't get sucked into surgery until you get a 2nd opinion. At the minimum, there are nerve conduction tests (like I had on my wrist) that can be done to oftentimes confirm the diagnosis. I'm managing my carpal tunnel just fine through stretches and exercise.

Good luck,

Gary

Thanks everyone, Mike thank you for clearing the contest idea up. Gary I also have Planter Fasciitis as well and that what they thought this might have been at the on set but the PT I was going through it did not help. Believe me I don't want to have surgery but I trust this doctor he is the only one who in the past 5 month that has an idea on how to fix the problem. All the other idea's did not help.

Dan, you could post the blanks you need as Mike suggested. If you sell the pens on etsy or ebay, and the highest $ wins, it doesn't matter if you know who made it. Big blanks are going to bring more money than slims, so if you want to have Evelyn pick a winner, have the blanks sent to someone else to log the blanks you receive and identify them to you by number.
