Greetings,
I'm a retired editor and hobbyist woodworker living in rural Connecticut. I have developed a way to hold a pen mandrel on the lathe in tension, not compression. That means it stays taut, even under pressure from your turning tools.
You can see the mandrel, get more information, and order one on my web site:

Thanks,
David Heim

Folks,
The mandrel depends on the locking property of the Morse taper to supply the tension. Once everything is in place on the lathe, you lock the tailstock and retract it just until you begin to feel resistance in the handwheel.
The mandrel doesn't depend on a drawbar.
Hope this answers everyone's questions.
Finally, my apologies for misspelling the name of my own website. I should learn to proofread better.
Best,
David Heim
