I'm not trying to be rude but I have to ask, is this really necessary? I've been seeing you do this a lot lately and I'm wondering how much of the IAP bandwidth you're taking when it doesn't seem like the poster you mention in these is as interested as you. Also, I have to skim through these trying to find posts that interest me. I don't know how anyone else feels but for me it getting old.

Please, no disrespect intended. I respect your right to free speech and I'm not trying to be ugly, mean or create an enemy, I just have to ask, why?

It makes the recipient, in most cases, feel good. It exposes those who are contributing. It helps open a conduit to those who are willing to share their experiences. Post counts contribute to the importance of this site to sponsors. And yes, I take offense. I would rather not bother when this is what I get in return, Bruce.

You are welcome to return to the ranks of which most pen turners are known - BORING.

I am going in the other direction and joining those who are innovative, inspirational, creative and add to the human spirit. But I think I will not announce postings any longer. I can see your point. It seems to be an irritant to some and that is not necessary.

When I saw John's first post like this a while back, I admit that the first thing that went through my mind was....'Mmmm, that's a bit cheesy'

But then I remembered a couple of things.

On the original IAP site, every time you posted a message it said..'Thank You For Your Contribution!'

....and that's what forums like this are all about. Contributions by it's members. It couldn't exist without them. I agree that there are many posts and members that aren't worth the air time or bandwith. But in the main, we all come here to show off or learn something or both.
I don't think it's a waste of time to acknowledge someones 'milestone' post count. Especially if they actually 'contribute' and help us all.

With the time differance, anyone east of USA sees the birthday list first and I used to have fun wishing folks ( esp those that I knew) a happy birthday just after midnight our time. Then a couple of miserable sods said the same as has been said here and pointed out that it wasn't neccessary as the site calender said who's birthday it was anyway. So I stopped doing it.

The neccessary things we do in life are normally called work. It's the UN-neccessary thing that we do that are fun!!!

Right....I'll get off my soap box and go have a beer now!!

I have to say that I have been ignoring these posts John. The only reason I stopped in on this one was to see what Skip had to contribute. I don't care for them but If you want to post them and the Friends of, and the person your acknowledging respond, who am I to criticize anothers post or reason for posting. Post away, and if the others dont care for the posts they can simply choose to skip over them. Mike

I have to admit that when I first saw Bruce's response, I thought "this could get interesting." I tend to lean towards Bruce's mindset only because every day several members hit some sort of one hundred post milestone. To me, that doesn't warrant any special recognition, but that doesn't mean that your posts aren't appreciated by others. I wouldn't take offense to it, nor would I stop doing it just because there are those who don't appreciate it.

If it makes you happy to recognize others, then do it. If I don't feel like reading or contributing to the thread, I reserve the right to skip it. It really isn't all that complicated to me. I say keep it up, John.

I have to say, I was cynical as well about these posts at first but after seeing them over the last few months, I began to appreciate them. Probably because it is nice to be recognized for contributing and supporting. Thanks, John for looking outside of yourself and lifting up others. It's a small gesture that shows your appreciation. Thank you.

Thank you, Eric. I noticed you just hit THREE HUNDRED POSTS. Good work. I enjoy hearing from you and seeing what you have accomplished.

When I see a post I don't want to read I just skip over it, besides if I read everything on this site I would not be able to do any pen turning. But four thousand WOW thats great.

Keep it up John. You aren't hurting anyone or anything. Those who don't want to read them don't have too. Thank you for your contributions to this community and for attempting to recognize those who provide us with the valuable information and feedback that we come here for in the first place..

That's a good thing about forums if don't like the thread, just don't read it. I know I don't read everyone and doubt that very many read every single one. Keep it up John.

I'm not a fan of these post and seldom read them, especially ones in the hundreds but John has his reasons for doing them and thats all we need to know and nobody is getting hurt by them so what's the big deal, so John keep doing what you feel is an asset to the forum and those that don't like them just don't have to read them.

Only thing that bothers me a little bit is the controversy started with my name in the post! I appreciate John's appreciation of my contributions. Thanks John. I generally do not read the "500 posts" type threads or whatever, but they do not bother me and if John wants to congratulate every single IAP member for posting then I don't see what's the big deal. Do whatever you want John...either way no matter who you are, not everyone will agree with you all the time, it's just part of life. This is why you just stick to your beliefs and keep going forward.

DITTO:biggrin:

I think I ought not over do it.

I do think that there are major contributors that I appreciate and want to acknowledge but there are newbies that need to know their input is wanted so that they grow with the Site.
In summation: One of the basic "needs" of man is to be acknowledged or needed or wanted. This helps fill that need as long as it is not annoying.
Thank you for ALL the input. Even Bruce's.

John, I think you must be a really nice guy, you just don't let things get you too excited. If LOML and I ever get to TX we would love to meet up with you!

That would be fantastic. We, however, are moving to (hopefully) Frazier Park, Ca. We won't be too far from you and we can visit and make some pens, have a beer, glass of wine, share stories and whoop it up.
Thank you for your comments. Made me feel better.
Wait, 271 miles, 4hr and 35 minute drive. Hmmmmmm. Maybe we'll meet you halfway.

Post what you want as long as you aren't offensive, mean or nasty. Life is way too short to not give a shout out to people. Funny, but I often check how many posts someone has. Lets me know how involved they are with any forum I am visiting. Most people like the pat on the back. Not to change the subject, but where is Frasier Park in California?

Ok, Here is a newbie's comment. First of all look at it this way. How many pen tuners you have on your street. Or do you even know all your neigbors on that street. How many friends do you have in your town or in the community or at work that you can talk to them about our silly expensive habit? or any one of your naigbors that I mentioned would stop by and and admire your work. Besides how many do you know that would even understand what your talking aobut. I am not that old age wise, but ( no offense) there are someguys on this site that know for fact that not that many years ago there wasn't such a thing available as on line forums and friends. some didn't even know what or who was doing anything in the next town down the road. All John is trying to do is lift up some one's spirit and there is nothing wrong with that. We sure don't bicker when politicians crap on our day all day long and we don't say anything aoubt it. On the other hands, as so many posted that you have the freedom of skipping over these kinds of messages if you want. And, trust me if you guys want to start worrying about the band width or space that it takes; honestly there are lots of non ralted things that get posted here. And the owners would have stopped it a long time ago if they thought tha tway. Heck travel to some middle eastern countries and then watch how they can not even express themselves for nothing on line, in person, in the media or nothing. At least we have our freedom to express our feelings. I apprecaite what John is doing and that's waht makes aus TEXANS hospitable.
Amen, and this was end of the sermon, now every one back to making dust and drinking whatever that you guys drink. ANd let us clean up the mess the BP made onour shores. I amy not make a living by pen turning, but I think I canpreach pretty good for my won entertainment.
BTW, this was more than 2 cents I think was $.22, LOL
God bless.
