Do you guys have a recommendation for a vendor so I can get a 3" tool rest for my Jet 1236?

Now that I don't use a mandrel my tool rest wont get into that tiny space!

If you call a local steel supplier, they will cut the length you need to fit in the banjo. With this method below, your tool post will need to be 1" less than the TOTAL length of your original tool post from top to bottom. DO NOT measure just the post, this method may need a longer post to offset the "head". Then place the 3/4 (1'?) rod in your scroll chuck and drill a hole 2 drill bits smaller than 1/4". Now tap the hole to 1/4"-20tpi. With that hole, you can now take a piece of angle iron, drill a hole in the middle, and bolt it with a grade 8 bolt to the rod, using a external tooth lock washer to keep it in place.

If you like, in fill the angle iron with wood by drilling a shallow relief hole for the bolt head, and two smaller holes on the ends, close to the corner and on the bottom. Clamp the wood in the angle iron and drill the holes in the wood. Secure with a small pan screw. Now flatten the wood from edge to edge to fill the tool rest. You can skip the wood, but it looks and feels better with it.

Kinda like this, but I did not like the rounded profile and made them all flat so the wood looked like a "V" filling the angle iron.
PS, round the inside corner of the wood for a flush fit.

You might sned an email to Lamar Sherrill (SWOODWRKNG on this forum). I had him make a set of tool rests and his price was very reasonable.

As been said, Lamar make a good tool rest

also check out http://www.monster-wood-tool.com/wst_page5.html Randy will custom make tool rests, I had one for my 1236 and gave the rest to Karl when he purchased the lathe.

Also, Robust lathe has some awesome tool rests http://www.turnrobust.com/Comfort_Tool_Rests.html I purchased a 6" and a 9" from Bill Gumbine http://www.wonderfulwood.com/. These are the nicest and most comfortable rests on the market. Rubost also has a 4" tool rest.

Finally, if you know how to weld or know someone who does, it's not hard to weld one up out of some round stock and/or angle iron.

If all you want is a couple of pieces of round stock welded together PM me the measurements and I'll throw something together.
Send me a couple blanks and we'll call it even.[8D]

Thanks guys... it was kinda funny running all over the web and all I cold find was 6", 9", and longer tool rests...

I sent Randy an email... I will wait for the response and go from there... I have one of his hollowing rigs and the workmanship is awesome.
