Looks like I chose a horrible weekend in Champaign/Urbana. It's Mother's Weekend on April 10-11. I personally participated in Father's Weekend all 4 years (that time of year when you celebrate sending your child and all your money to The University of Illinois). Hotels rooms are nearly sold out, and if you can find one, they likely will require a two night minimum. Soooooooooooooo, I'm going to check on the hall availability for the following weekend, April 17-18. Dawn reminded me that the 10-11 weekend is the final weekend before taxes. Taxes? As Homer Simpson says, "I did those last year!"
Mark James asked me about maybe finding another venue in a surrounding area, that might make hotel reservations easier. Problem with that is finding a really nice, fair sized venue for FREE, is even tougher than finding a hotel room in Champaign on Mother's Weekend!

SORRY FOLKS!!!!!!!!!

Didn't we have it somewhere closer to your house a couple years ago?

(Just tossing out an idea, Rich---we will be there whenever and wherever you decide, but the hotel problem COULD greatly reduce attendance)

Mother's day is on May 10, a Sunday If the MPG is on April 10 Friday and 11 Saturday, there should be no conflict.

That was my first reaction too, Bob!

The "mother's day" in Champaign refers to all the moms of the college students. U of I used to have 10,000 students, don't know what it is now, but more than there are rooms in Champaign, apparently.

I suspect that Mother's Weekend (and Father's Weekend) are both sponsored by the Champaign/Urbana Chamber of Commerce. It has nothing to do with Mother's Day, and all about events around campus and restaurants. The last time I took our son out to eat on a Father's Weekend, it was to Steak and Shake, and we ate in the car. Besides Father's Weekend, they also had a home football game. You couldn't get within a mile of a seat at any place to eat after the game. So if you consider that, plus every hotel room selling out in the community, it's a real cash cow for the local businesses.

When I read of the room problem I had decided that would eliminate me. Had to deal with that a few years ago, not fun.
Hope you can find an alternate date or location, really like the MPG.

To be fair to YOU Rich, last year the date was thrown out and all present seemed fine. None of us had any thoughts of conflicts.

Not an easy task now! As a volunteer coordinator your job just got tougher. Not your fault.

We do appreciate you spearheading this!

There is a new date, April 17-18. I'll start a new post to announce it. The hall has been reserved, I'm calling a couple of hotels to double double check.

The Hotels in Champaign really have a good thing going. All of the major brands that I checked (Hilton, Marriott, Hyatt) have a two-night minimum.

I asked the girl at the Marriott I called and she said that most of the major hotels put a two-night minimum on weekend stays and she did not have any one-night staty until November. WOW.

So they are making it difficult to stay in a major brand with points or even paying for a stay because they can and people will pay it.

It does look like there are more discount brands available on the 17-18 if you look on travelocity though.

Thanks for being so flexible Rich. :)

I just reserved the Extended Stay America property. I can cancel later if needed but the price is only $67. For the Trip Advisor rating I thought it was a good deal.

In case anyone is interested:

Extended Stay America Champaign - Urbana
610 W. Marketview Dr.
Champaign, IL 61822
(217) 351-8899

Through Travelocity: Red Roof Inn, Champaign.

I booked 2 double beds, $147 for 2 nights total, with free cancellation.

Now I'll cancel the previous week.

Hey Rich... Thanks - I saved some money through the switch :bananen_smilies051:

I've started a new post, but date and hall has been reserved. Looks like the 17-18 date will stick. I have a block of 15 rooms set, see the new post for info!
