Please check the entries below. The work this year is outstanding.
We have 10 works of art to choose from. There is a great variety of techniques and inspiration. While photos cannot always do justice, please pay attention to the:

  • technique
  • ingenuity
  • fit and finish
  • as well as your personal feel.

I am letting you choose your two favorites.
If I have done it right the contest should be open until Saturday. Allowing the winner to be announced on Sunday, before the end of the Bash.

Title of Your Entry: Doctor Who Sonic Fountain Pen

Description: I designed and made a fountain pen replica of the 9th and 10th Doctor Who Sonic Screwdriver. The body is made from a cellulose acetate screwdriver handle with a crackle paint finish like the original. The blue hemisphere is a Diamond Cast blank, the black finial is Delrin. Silver parts are Aluminum. #5 nib and cartridge converter. The windows in the cap were milled out and acrylic windows filed and fitted. All parts were threaded with taps and dies. I did not make the book nook.

Title of Your Entry: Exotic Potato

Description: Inspiration struck in the snack aisle of the supermarket. I cast the blank in Alumilite clear, with Alumilite dyes, Eye Candy pigments, using a schmidt converter, and a Nimosine #6 Renentry nib in F. The colors are based on Terra's Exotic Potato chips.

Title of Your Entry: Spiraled fountain pen in bicolor bocoa wood

Description: This pen is all wood , except the nib unit (a Jowo #6), the converter and the clip. The bocoa takes threads wonderfully, it is bicolor, and I have been happy enough to align the grain of the three parts.

The clip comes from a Blingless kit from Timberbits ,adorned with a spiraled piece of bocoa to fit the pen. The ring is hidden, I mean the cap is in one piece.

Barrel, cap and section have been spiraled with Sorby's little spiraling tool, not always easy to do it on a taper.

Title of Your Entry: The Relativity Pen

Description: This plain white pen was designed to uncover the secret behind Relativity. Use it like any other pen, but a twist of the base triggers an electrochemical reaction that unleashes a torrent of photons traveling at the speed of light in order to reveal the secret behind Relativity. The pen was entirely 3D printed. (Vote for me and I'll reveal the secret process - heck, I'll reveal it even if you don't!)

Title of Your Entry: Orange sunrise

Description: I used several homemade blanks to assemble this fountain pen, all cast by me using various dyes and mica powders. Copper accent rings are included at the end junctions of both the cap and body. The only thing I would change now is the ink window that I find located a few millimeters too low in the body, maybe on the next iteration. Nib assembly and converter were purchased.
Come on, let's get some action and all sing together now... :D

Title of Your Entry: Ebonite and Hybrid Maple

Description: This fountain pen is made with a combination of ebonite and a hybrid maple burl blank. The blank I made myself by stabilizing the burl and casting it with allumilite. The cap, threads, and end cap have all been made using black ebonite, with a woodgrain finish. The cap features a maple burl inlay.
The bought components for this pen were the Jowo #5 nib and the converter.

Title of Your Entry: Mixed media

Description: Kitless fountain pen made from purchased blanks. The cap is a hybrid. Burl, aluminum honeycomb and Alumilite resin. The body is 3d printed honeycomb filled with Alumilite resin. The section is burl that I sleeved with liquid diamonds so that I could thread for the body and nib unit. M13x0.8 triple start threads for cap to body. M10x1.0 threads a section to body. Section is threaded for the jowo #6 nib unit. All turning and threading was done on my wood lathe with hand tools.

Title of Your Entry: Double Decker Demonstrator

Description: This beautiful pen features two separate amber demonstrator sections, both a full nib view and an ink window. The pen was made with 7 different pieces, all threaded together and epoxied for strength, then sanded and polished for hours to achieve a stunningly clear window on both the cap and barrel. The pen blanks were purchased, as was the nib and assembly. All other work was done by me, by hand, on a wood lathe. The clear amber sections are contrasted by a swirling storm of orange and black.

Well, this is definitely a "kitless maker" forum!! Looks like this is where all the effort went!

Having such a hard time deciding between 3, 6, and 8.... So good!!

I can't vote for a kitless pen without a clip, #04 gets my vote.

Step it up guys, I know installing clips is hard but that's the point. :)

I feel the same way - unless there is a truly compelling reason why there should be no clip, such as #1. (I'd also prefer the clip to be made rather than purchased.)

I don't think installing a clip is hard, a little more planning. The hard part is making a clip that doesn't look home made. I see very few examples of ones that don't.
