I was turning bowl blanks and was about finished with the second Walnut blank when my last pass with the gouge on the outside of the blank felt like the gouge was dull. Went to the grinder and sharpened it up, returned to the lathe and the blank and spun the blank as I always do (habit I guess) before starting up again and saw something odd about the blank.

That could have been nasty - it's probably lucky that you stopped to sharpen your gouge when you did, another pass might have been all it needed to separate.
 
holy smokes.... you better go buy a lottery ticket although you may have already won it today. That could have been ugly
 
I've sucessfuły turned cracked blanks after soaking in thin CA and letting it cure for several days. All depends on how comfortable you are with the risk.
