I made a run to Home Goods a couple days ago and scored some Olivewood, Acacia, and Sheesham. I've always loved Olivewood. As you can see, the Acacia is an end grain cutting board. I've turned pens using Acacia Blackwood, so I'm assuming the woods are related. The end grain will be harder to turn, but I'm hopeful that longer blanks will look cool. I hadn't heard of Sheesham. According to my 15 seconds of Google research, it's also called Indian Rosewood. As always, my sole criterion is that the cutting board looks like it will yield some cool blanks.

last year I made a run through Home goods near me and scored some real nice olive wood as well. The price was right too. Must have hit about 6 around my area. So I stocked up. Make for other nice projects which I have in mind too. Hope to get back in shop this winter. Nice score and you are correct makes nice pen blanks.

I did same at Kohl's last year...got a few really nice Italian Olivewood...3/4" thick cutting boards...lots of great grain and some curl :-) ...and on sale !!

Hmm. Cutting boards seem to be a good resource for pen blanks. Have Kohl's locally. Home Goods is about 30 miles away. Get in that area occasionally, need to check on their inventory. Thanks for the tips!

I'd love to make an economy bowl from that Acacia cutting board. Just so happens I'm going right past a HG this weekend. I'll take my credit card.

Over the past couple years, I have raided a couple of our local Home Goods - finding wood that you can use is hit or miss, but I have come home with some outstanding boards for really reasonable prices. Many of their boards are cut too thin (less than 3/4") so they are too slim for decent pen blanks. The photo David put up looks just like the home goods shelves around where I live - it's fun to go dig through the piles, and sometimes find some real gems.

There is a home goods roughly 5 miles from me that I may be raiding in the near future. First I need to work through some of the other pen blanks I have though as my collection of pen blanks continues to grow...
