My first pen in over three months. Egad. This is a McKenzie Penworks Coyote click kit, natural stainless. The machining is incredible. What a nice kit. The American holly is from a tree that came down in a storm this spring in Delaware. CA finish. Holly is an interesting wood to work...

That's a sharp pen. I really like the pairing with that blank. Holly is usually a bit whiter, but the darker streaks look great with the stainless. It has to be harvested during the winter when it's dormant for the clean white pieces. The stuff I tried to dry all cracked, but I'll keep trying.

Thanks! Yeah, I was hoping for pure white but seems like not a chance with this stuff. My wife and I were walking and found a stack of these "logs" (most between maybe 5-8" diameter) at the edge of a property. Tree came down, owner diced it up. Free for the taking; I now have enough holly for about 1000 pens and spoons. Painted the ends with about 5-6 coats of shellac, none have checked yet (it's been since February). It does bake nicely. This pen is earmarked for the gentleman who provided the stock.
