Recently there have been numerous threads regarding questions about the use of a mitersaw to cut blanks to size. I've always used one for wood and acrylic blanks. I've never had any problems in the blanks I've cut in this way. The biggest issue is safety and I've overcome the problem.
I use a Delta miter saw that I've had for years. It's a great way to cut blanks down, allowing a small amount of excess on each side in order to square using a pen mill or sander.
Now the negative to using this method is holding the blanks by hand so close to the blade. A friend of mine designed a great jig to hold blanks at a safe distance. I'm pretty sure that someone must make a commercial product for this. Here's the homemade jig I use.
