I'm a pretty new turner and this is the first rollerball I've tried. So many people have posted neat ones that I felt compelled to try it. It's the Exotic Blanks Diamond Knurl Chrome Rollerball with a red mallee blank. I use GluBoost for finish, micromesh sanded and then some flitz for a final polish. It's got a couple issues but I had a lot fun trying it and will definitely do more.

Congratulations on your rollerball. I really like Ed's Diamond Knurl rollerball kits. It looks great to me. Nice blank, great kit, and a really good fit.

I've never really liked writing with rollerball ink, so I almost always replace the rollerball ink refill with a Broad Point, Pilot G2 refill. I like the broad point and I really like the Pilot Gel ink. A lot of times I buy the Pilot G2 click pens which are readily available and then I take the refill out and scrap the rest. I find it much easier and often just as inexpensive as tracking down and ordering just the refills by themselves.

Great first Rollerball.

Dave

I really like the combination of the components and blank material. Your finish is outstanding. Well done.

Dave - honestly I wanted to tag you in the description because some of your rollerball pens were absolutely the reason why I wanted to do one. Thanks very much for the kind words.

I'll look into the pilot refill too. I usually just spend the extra buck and buy the ink upgrade from exotic blanks when I order the components.

well, I did get to choose the angle of the photos to hide stuff like that.... Thanks very much for the kind words

I was just trying to learn how to do these pens and discovered my mandrel has picked up a wobble in the process. When I'm done with a pen they get turned over to my wife and kids who go over them pretty hard. The wobble made one end of the blank be slightly out of round and my wife pointed it right out. I have a spot where I cracked the finish between layers of the GluBoost too. I think I put too much pressure on the blank when pressing it all together. I may have had a high spot on the end of the blank or something too. It's tough to troubleshoot. I did another one last night with a new mandrel and tried to make sure I was gentle with the press and it turned out really nice.

I really like the GluBoost to do finish on pens, it makes life so much nicer because it does a nice job.

Whatever issues you had, I can't see them, both fit and finish look very very good to me. Nice work!

Thanks very much - like I said I'd seen some others post photos of theirs and had to try. This pen combo is a somewhat shameless copy of their ideas. Egnald in particular has some spectacular roller ball pens. (his work in general too)

I usually buy the upgrade refill from Exotic Blanks too. Some people like the more liquidy rollerball ink. The Pilot G2 Gel is just a personal favorite. - Dave
