My Weekend Project:

6 Pens made from Bog Oak.

I normally love doing a mirror CA finish, but I feel Bog Oak looses its grain and depth when coated with CA. I have found that Mylands Friction Polish works best with ancient Bog Oak.

This is funny because I literally just finished a bog oak pen last night. I had the exact same thoughts as you. I always use CA and polish to a high shine on wood pens but looked at this and it screamed leave it alone. So I finished mine with satin lacquer and love the look. Your pens are all super classy. You did right with the finish. I never used Bog Oak before but will use again for sure.

Thanks for showing !!!!

Thanks to both you and JT for encouraging the use of a finish other than CA . . Am about to do the same on my little project for today !!

Mal it actually is one of those times and there have been a few for me that CA is just not the answer and from Marc's great photos you can see the grain pattern. I was going to fill with black putty and top coat with CA but it just would look too fake. I think he and I bought these blanks from the exact same person because they look exactly alike and that grain pattern needs to be celebrated. I have used lacquer on pens before and they were basically desk style pens and not carry pens so they hold up well but there is no reason that lacquer can not do well even on a carry pen. I put about 6 or 7 coats on and as I said I like the look.

Agree with nixing the CA on Bog Oak. I use either Dr.'s Woodshop Pens Plus or Yorkshire Grit's abrasive and microfine pastes. Ack's would work as well.

Good looking bunch of pens!! For Irish Bog Oak i pretty much only use wax (Renaissance normally). There is something magical about being able to physically touch something that is 4,000 to 5,000 years old. Before i hand one to someone, i ask them what the oldest thing they ever touched is--and it's rarely an object more than 150-200 years. CA would be a barrier to that experience--at least that's my opinion.

Wonderful set, and I cannot agree more. To me, Bog Oak begs to be left alone with the open grain. To even consider filling the grains to me is simply wrong.

Well done!
