My wife and I went to diner the other night, while waiting for our table I noticed these two people suiting real close waiting for their table. They were probably early 20s. The while time they were on their phones, I pointed that out to my wife and said he isn't getting lucky tonight. My wife said thats what people that age do and you are just getting old! Is she right?

I'll call myself old as long as I don't have to wear those stupid skinny jeans. Of course I think in on the younger end of the spectrum here... ;)

This topic reminds me of an episode of Raising Hope where the relatively young grandparents were feeling old so they went to a club for the night. The first thing they said to each other at the club was "I think if we stare at our phones we will fit in better." So they flipped open their phones and stared at the number pad. On a related note, I went to an indoor graduation last week and when the lights went down you could see hundreds of glowing smart phones with busy fingers around them. Personally, I have no idea why anyone would want to broadcast every move they make. I still believe that silence is golden and I greatly appreciate solitude. The young folks today seem to be very uncomfortable with quiet or the sense of being alone. I guess that makes me a dinosaur.

While it true that younger people seem ...

to live on the cell phone. It can be kinda sad.

We were in the food court of mall not to long ago. Four young women were having lunch together. At one point, one got up and moved away so she could talk on her phone. At the same, two others were chatting away on theirs. The fourth, sat there picking at her food while the other three were doing something more important.

In this case, the electronic tethers were destroying a social relationship.

I thought it was sad.

Ed maybe YOUR getting old.....an old man couldn't do half the stuff I do and live!

The cell phone thing.......that only for kids who are old before there time!

Cell phones, in my opinion, are the most abused invention mankind has ever come up with. By the time today's kids are grown, they'll be talking to each other on the cell phone over the breakfast table and the first thing their babies will learn is how to tap a screen.

If you see me on my phone it's because I'm at this forum!

Teenagers already do text across the table from each other.

Truly young people though don't make phone calls at all. Everything is text. Even people my age are pretty bad with it (30s).

Personally I love technology, but we need to discipline ourselves - know when to put it away.

I wish I could be around when some of the these young people with all the Tats and Peircings hit 70 like me. That is going to be one ungly bunch of senior citizens and the finger especially their thumbs will be a mess for texting.

That's okay. We don't need thumbs anymore. Now we have Siri. :-/

My daughter (31) calls me the text Nazi. If she sends me 3 texts, I'm calling her.
My son hardly knows how to hold a conversation.

I'm younger than some and older than I wanna be but in Jr High, ATT came and gave a tech talk. They said by the yr 2000 we'd have phones to walk around with. Thought they were crazy. Hated it when the wife bought ours. Now I feel naked without one and don't have a home phone anymore. God forbid someone call me when I don't have it. Is there a Cell Phone Anonymous started yet?

I am sure over the next decade we will see new keyboards that are just made for texting. Three will be a new generation that can text at 50 words per minute and the regular keyboard will loose it's edge. The cell phones are revolutionizing the way we do things.

Interestingly, my mom (60) texts much more than I do.

I think the text message has its place for conveying quick info / questions / for a situation where it would be difficult to talk on the phone, but for a conversation, just pick up the phone.

Texting is destroying communication skills and giving people the sense that they're important CEOs who have to stay in constant contact with their peers...

I made the conscious decision to NOT have a connected cell phone - my rotary dial is just fine!

I maintain I should be allowed to rescind the driver's licenses of people I see texting while driving - just because they don't mind risking their lives doesn't mean they should risk mine!

(I'm the oldest early-30s person on the planet, apparently)

Every generation is different for good or bad. Trying to force our ideals is a never ending battle. In some cases it won't be worth it but in others it will be.

My battles are numerous with the young Marines. First one I won was that word/information will never be passed in a written/text format unless it is just confirming what was passed via voice (voicemail doesn't count!).

We may be older but technically each generation is a reflection if the previous ones.

The difference between generations, in my opinion, is much greater now than at anytime in the past. Not just because of the very rapid advancement in electronics over the last 50 years or so but also because of the changed attitudes toward many aspects of society held by members of the generations following mine. One can't go into them here because many of them touch on politics or region but 'texting' and 'constant jabbering' on the cell phones/androids/blackberrys/whatever is just the visible surface of the differences.

I don't believe you have a rotary phone. I need proof. :-)

I used to hate when we would go out to dinner with friends and before the food arrived everyone was too busy on their phones to have a conversation. Now when we go out we all put our phones on the table in plain view. The first person that picks up their phone for any reason has to pay for the meal that night.

I guarantee if I did that Dragon I would end up paying, because my wife has an iphone, and it seems it will disapear if she doesn't touch it. LOL.

Held up a mug so you can see I didn't just take it off the internet!

Many people don't realize Rotary phones still work --- at least on land lines. In a time when we change phones almost as often as we change our socks it's good to see someone who isn't intimidated.
