I wasn't sure it would work but wanted to try anyway.
This started out as a 5/8" poly blank. It is just over .636" on the narrow side so it is a bit over 5/8". I turned it round until there was just a trace of the flat left to take full advantage of the diameter. Drilling with a 13/32 and the tube measures .400" OD. I cooled the bit about a dozen times takeing small amounts and using veg spray. I was within a few thousands end to end which suprised me because of the 3.5" depth. I probably would not have been able to do this on a wood blank, but I may try just to see.
So, you can use 5/8" blanks where it calls for a 3/4". You just have to take the time to get everything set up good and accurate.
The blank is called tobacco marble and should make a nice pen with the chrome Zen.

Well, I was able to drill the same size hole in what looks like a piece of hickory. This one was about .630 OD and I used the same setup.
There is a variance of .014" in wall thickness on the exit hole. Not bad for some very hard straight grained wood.
