Monday, our wood turning club had a youth pen turning class. We had six students. These kids have just started to turn. The pen class was class 3 of a 4 part series. They have turned a two part gavel, an ice cream scoop handle, these pens, and will tackle a small bowl next time.
The kids are the grand children of 2 of our club members and are home schoolers so they were available during the daytime. We did a 2 hour class, had some instruction time first to show the process and to show some pens before hitting the shop. We demonstrated drilling on the lathe, using a carbide tool, spindle roughing gouge and a skew.
The blanks for the class were pre drilled, tubed and milled, ready to go on the lathe to save time and keep the kids on task while we had their attention. We did have one club member per student which was very good.
Special thanks to Tom, (tdsmart IAP)/club member who led the teaching!
The pen chosen for the class was the Sierra/Wall Street II style. Just one blank with more meat on the bones and an easy assembly. These were chosen so everyone would have success on the first go. Our Chisel of the Day: A spindle roughing gouge. Start to finish.
In the pics, you will see one student who is just a little bit older than the others. She is the grandmother of three of these and she is a new turner as well.....and a kid at heart!
