This week coming is our December monthly meeting at the TVWG and there is an ornament exchange. This is the creation I came up with and I hope the recipient enjoys it as much as I did making it.
The hollow orb is box elder burl which was set in stabilizing fluid (CJ & blue) and allowed to soak without vacuum for about 3 hours. The orb was then dried off and immersed in clear stabilizing fluid (CJ) and placed under vacuum until it stopped bubbling. The orb was then cooked and stabilized completely. The upper and lower finials are turned from blackwood. The entire ornament was then coated with Circa 1850 tung oil and hung to dry. A few more coats of tung oil and a light buffing should put the finishing touches on this piece.
3" in diameter and 12" long.
BTW.....the upper finial has a captive ring turned on it. It's hard to tell, but it is there.
