A friend gave me a bag of the woodcraft corks for stoppers. They really don't look all that sturdy....a few already had cracks. He asked me to turn some stoppers for him. Has anybody used these and did you use anything to make the corks more durable? I'm worried that they aren't going to stand up to use.

They are okay. Some are drilled off center. They won't last forever - that's for sure.

However - the strength comes from the dowel. Use a good hardwood dowel (I use oak). The fit is tight to the cork. A couple drops of glue on the dowel and a couple where the cork meets the stopper and it will be sturdier than you think.

Another inexpensive option is the silicone inserts.
