What kind of wood?

When traveling through Michigan I stopped at Rare Earth Woods. After buying several pieces he gave me the piece that pen number one came from. When I cut the pen blanks the sawdust was more like sanding dust. He didn't know what kind of wood it was and I don't know what kind of wood it is. Just wondering - do any of you know what kind of wood it is?
The 2nd pen is made from Spalted Maple. I stabilized both.

Isn't that a neat store?? Did they have any $35. boxes of wood?? It usually contains samples of what they have in the show room.
