A friend of mine has a small metal plate with threads in it with the size of the thread beside each hole. ie, find the correct size hole for a machine screw and you will know the size of the screw.
Please tell me the proper name for this tool and where I can buy one. Thanks as always.

I have always been told "screw gage" was the correct name. I have a Starrett thread gage and there are no holes.

yup. Technically, the ones for bolting parts together are called machine screws. Not to be confused with the other types of screws such as wood screws, plastic cutting screws, or sheet metal screws, which all have different threads. The plastic machine screw gages with all the bolt holes and clearance holes seem to work fine.
