tube blackening

I went to micheals they didn't have tube blackener. Don't really want to order any or order black tubes. Is there a solution I might be able to concoct out of household chemicals that I probably have an abundance of as well as other shop and car chemicals? If it takes longer to get black it doesn't matter to me.

Jeff, I have used black Rit clothing dye. It has worked well for me. Not sure if any one else has tried this.

Look for Brass Darkening Solution locally. I picked up some WSI J-3492 for around $4.00 at the local hardware store.

Ok, gun shop and very old hardware store are right next to one another downtown here so thanks. I know about the stuff you can order online, but like I said I dont' want to do that, and that's because it's not worth the shipping costs. I don't want paint, just want to darken the tubes to apply skins to them. Appreciate all your replies.
