Thanks guys - I really like the shape of it! I have to work on bowls, though - they're a lot harder than pens...this is one of my first, so it took a long afternoon to make (albeit a LAZY afternoon, with LOTS of coffee breaks)...

The finish is BLO, and then some weird stinky liquid from Lee Valley...http://www.leevalley.com/wood/page.aspx?c=1&p=20105&cat=1,190,42942

I then gave it a quick skim with some gloss lacquer...I wanted a bit more shine, but I'm still not convinced that I like the finish on it...the shine brings the curl out more, though...

And yes, it's curly maple. I really like maple - a lot easier to turn than walnut, for me at least...I wish I had more of it! This was from an ebay auction before i even had the lathe! I should have bought more maple from that same seller!
