Some labors of love:
Our ceramics studio built a large wood-firing kiln with old fire brick, thanks to master ceramist John Toki, kiln architect Nick Swartz, visionary artist/studio owner Margaret Tassi (upper left), Michele (upper right), (my minor role laying some brick), and other studio ceramists, my piece:
Wheel-thrown cone 10 porcelain
Front plane flattened with a trowel
Sgraffito low relief carving of Thelonious Monk (one of my heroes) into the leather-hard clay
Bisque fired at cone 6
Underglazed
Then wood-fired with the team - 4 days of 6 hour shifts - stoking every 10-15 minutes with various found woods - eating pizza from the pizza stone/oven in the back of the kiln - great time - 4 days cool-down - then opened:
