I am a graphic designer (surprise, surprise) that designs all types of ads for folks all over the world. Recently I did an ad for this apartment complex, no big deal there, but what WAS cool was the image they sent me to use for the main photo in the layout. Check out the "picture" above the mantel. And before you ask....Yes, it is from one piece of timber...I asked. I would give my left arm and maybe even part of the right one to own that!

Is it a solid slab or a giant piece of veneer over another substrate?

He told me that it was a solid slab he got from a lumber yard that specializes in reclaiming old timber. That one's story was that it was fished off the bottom of a river that ran really cold most of the year, preserving the wood. He wouldn't tell me what he paid for it, but he hinted that you could buy a Hyundai Accent with what he spent.
