Tell me about honing

I have access to a Rikon slow speed grinder and Wolverine sharpening system, but think I need a hone to keep tool sharp between sharpening.

Can you point me in the right direction?

I use one of the diamond credit card styles to touch up the tool between trips to the grinder. A few strokes does the trick. Be sure you don't round over the cutting edge or you will dull the tool.

What JimB says plus you can wrap 600 grit sandpaper around a dowel and hone off the burr on the inside flute of the gouges.

This is what I use. I usually add a drop of baby oil. Their is always one right next to my lathe.

I have used the Alan Lacer diamond hone and the honestar CBN hone sold by Craft Supply

Both have rounded abrasive edges that fit inside flutes.

I reach for the CBN hone more often than the lacer diamond hone.
