I picked up a stratus from penn state to try out and the nib was covered in some kind of glue.

It looked like when they glued the pieces of the nib together, the glue pressed out around the black band and got all over.

I was able to get it off with about 5 minutes of scrubbing with acetone.

Is this typical? I am hesitant to buy more of them if this is normal.

Stratus pens

I've made several of these and never noticed any problem. I really like the smooth click mechanism too.

The black kit that I have over in my thread was covered in some kind of greasy film which I cleaned off with lighter fluid. It also has a machining flaw around the tip so the hole where the refill sticks out isn't round and has a nick out of it. Had to take it off sale and will use it as my carry pen. Also dubious as to the longevity of the black finish. Other than that I think the chrome and gun metal kits are nice.

If you don't like the kit refill, you should consider getting an upgraded refill. It makes a big difference in the way it writes!

Edit: I just realized you weren't talking about the refill, sorry!
