My guess would be it is something that only mother nature does.
I know that iron will "leech" into stone at times and no mater how hard you try, you can never remove it. To me, that is the effect you have gotten. The wood could have been drying on something like lime or another soft rock that the makeup of the stone allowed some 'leeching' of chemicals.
Looks beautiful but then everything that Mother Nature does is beautiful.

Bob, Chris and Stonepecker - thank you for the appreciation, and especially the detail in your reply, Stonepecker. I'm currently having another go at this on a bigger platter. Hopefully there'll be something worth posting at the end of the attempt!
