Hello all,

My name is Tom and my wife finally let me get a lathe (not a lot of room though). So I have started turning pens, now I am trying to learn the finer points to hopefully get them to pay for the lathe...I have been lurking for a while trying to learn as much as I could before I got started and will post a few pictures of the pens I turn as I can.

Welcome, Tom! Looking forward to seeing some of your work. There is a great Local Chapter in Wisconsin, too.

Below are links to two threads/articles that have lots of information on pen turning. The first one is a very basic overview of the many aspects of getting into turning pens.
http://www.penturners.org/forum/showthread.php?t=42446

The second link has postings by different pen turners and what they wish they had known earlier:

Here is another link - a PDF on the acronyms used here. I am sure you know many but this will help with those you don't.

Welcome Tom... In addition to the Local chapter of IAP (which I recommend the drive to MKE for!!!) - you might want to look into the N.E.W. Woodworking Guild, which meets once a month at UWGB. PM me if you want more information!

Maybe, but the lathe is the cheap part of the addiction.:wink:

Welcome Tom, Glad you joined us. It certainly is nice to have the wife's blessings when we start a new hobby. Too many times some of us have to "sneak" into a hobby like this. We will tell you that even in spite of her "support" it is a money sucker for a while! But it SURE is FUN!

WELCOME!
