I made quite a few of these years ago, and they were a lot of fun. I just ran across three kits that I bought probably 10 years ago. I turned this one from walnut, and finished it with Watco Danish oil. For some reason, this one doesn't spin very well. I tried to get most of the mass down low, but the tip is pretty round. That could be the problem. I might put it back on the lathe and reshape it.

Nice job on the top!
My first guess is the point also.
Second, the walnut looks slightly lighter in color on one side. Could you be getting a little from heartwood into sapwood and have an imbalance issue?

I do not see the difference in colors but the tip is a problem. Too much surface resistance. Thus a sharp point works well. Thanks for showing.
