I have a bigger piece of butternut, most folks use for carving. It has some really pretty grain to it and am wondering if I can turn it for say a vase? Is it too soft to polish up nice? Any advise to a newbie is appreciated.

Thanks.

Butternut should turn out just fine as a vase. It is many times called White Walnut since it is very closely related and the wood works similarly but is lighter colored. I've found that walnut can be somewhat difficult to get a good finish off the tool but sands up really nicely.

why don't you turn it and advise us of how it went? Then let us know how your finishing went...
