I don't think I've sharpened any of my lathe tools for several years - since I have not used the lathe seriously for 3 or 4 years
I've just been playing around getting my touch back and turning 1.5 piecs of maple. When I used my round gouge to just do stock removal it cuts and I geta good finish, but the shavings are small or powdery and I get a rough sound. I've sharpened a couple of times and It looks good and I get a burr that I remove with a slipstone but the cutting seems wrong. Its a Marples gouge purchased around 1976. I'm sharpening on a slow RPM wet stone so its not burnt - any suggestions for what I might be doing wrong.
By comparison, if U use a Sorby deep bowl gouge for stock removal on the cylinder - it almost whispers and I get nice curly shavings, and this one has not been sharpened for a long time.
