Shadow Boxes

Question:
When constructing a shadow box the flag is placed in different locations depending on whether the individual recognized is alive or deceased, but I don't know where.
Can someone please help?

I have helped put together quite a few for folks retiring, and the position varied on the layout of the other items included (Medals, Ribbons, Collar device, etc). I tried to google the location, but no real info. What I have seen is the Flag is included in the retirement shadobox with the rest of the momentos, but a burial flag is displayed alone.
