Our daughter saw folks using sea urchins as holders for air plants. We turned this into a turning project. For the table version, I turned a base and top collar from Walnut. On the hanging ones, (Cherry), the collar is on the bottom and a small button top with a hanger. The collars and base/buttons all have a tenon to fit in the hole in the shell. I did true up the holes for a good fit.
I turned bases for the hanging shells and used 12guage copper wire, hammered and textured for a hanger.
Also, I did a couple of non turned ones from a chunk of cherry and a spiral shell.
These are fun projects and something just a bit different....and can use small cutoffs.

I like those. I've made a few of the urchin Xmas ornaments, but not like these.

Well done, thanks for sharing.

Thanks! As a side note, our club has Sally Ault coming this month to demo and conduct a workshop. She is doing her urchin shell lidded box with a pedestal base.

I like those a lot, they're very cool and original. I'm guess the last is a nautilus?

Not sure Jay.....but the curly air plant works great as it continues the curvature of the shell.
Note there is a bit of reindeer moss in the shells around the air plants.

That's what I like about it, the plant just continues the curve, a perfect match. After a google search it appears that is indeed a nautilus shell.

Thanks for the info on the shell!
