Hi

Anybody else having trouble with their resin saver moulds. I have not ever used mine for about a year and they are falling apart. Just wondering if this is the norm and if it's quite an expansive mission that once one has all the gear together what you really need is not up to standard. I am a pensioner and have been collecting my gear over time. Now that I am ready having bought the resin etc low and behold, my moulds fall apart.

Bit disappointed.:confused::confused:

Roy, you are a scholar and a gentleman. Many thanks. I did not buy them from you so I feel I cannot make you responsible. I will find who sold them to me and see what happens.

You are the man. Many many thanks. I hope the Int. Pen makers association takes note and my many friends here. Lets support this guy.

mine are not "falling apart", but they have developed cracks in the corners on all three that I have. They are still usable though.

If they are the resin savers with the intergrated plugs (not the ones with the plugs that you insert), I had an issue where the plugs broke off. The issue is that the plugs are made independently then the rest of the mold is made around them. If there is any contaminate on the back side of the plug, they won't make a good bond causing them to break off easily. Mine were repaired/replaced by the maker with no problems.

What, exactly, is 'falling apart' on the molds?
I know you said you got them over a year ago, but iI think it must
have been longer than that. Neil took over the molds almost 2 years
ago and (if memory serves) the last molds I shipped to Australia were
somewhere around the summer of 2011 or so. (After that, people started
making their own)

If they haven't been used for two or two and a half years, it wouldn't
surprise me if the silicone is drying out. It will start to degrade all by itself,
even if it isn't used. In fact, if the molds had been used, you would have
been using some sort of release (I hope!) and replacing oils each time
you use it. In that way, using the mold can actually extend its useful life.

As Mike mentioned, if the stoppers come off, they are easily repaired. I tear
mine off often as I'm too impatient demolding. I tend to 'snap' them out.
But I put them back on with silicone caulking or bathroom sealer.. aquarium
sealer.. whatever is cheapest at the Dollar Store. I just use the sealer like
a thick glue and put them back on. They don't usually come off again. If you
do that, I'd repair one edge at a time, standing the mold against a wall with
with the repair on the bottom. That way gravity doesn't try to pull them off
before the 'glue' can set.

Do you have any photos?

Hi

I did say "more than a year ago" as I know it was not one year. I will make photo's hopefully this week. Thanks for the info on getting the plugs stuck back on. The moulds are still very pliable but just seem to pull apart. I have not "oiled" them as I was not aware one has to but they were in a plastic container. No instructions came with the moulds

Many thanks and kind regards

It's not so much that you have to oil them.. they will pick up oils
from the release as you use them. If I'm not going to use mine
for a while, I might put them in a plastic container, as you did. But
they'd already have release on them unless I washed it off. (not
something I normally do unless I did something dumb like pour a
casting without catalyst.
Not that I've ever done that, you understand.

I've heard some people wax them and put them in a plastic bag.
I haven't done it, but it makes some sense.. there's oils in the
wax, too.
Photos will be interesting to see. I'm curious as to where they
pull apart.

Just for the record, there has been a few changes to the design and the stoppers should not ever come off with the newest version of the molds.
