I try to maintain/repair any pen that I have made. When a customer asks me to repair a pen that they purchased from me, I always do the work at no charge.

My question is this, is there any way to refinish a CA finish without completely disassembling the pen? Some pens are relatively easy to take apart but others are nearly impossible, at least to me. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

The pens I have the problems with are mainly the clicker style pens.

Thanks,

Ken

That is very difficult to do! If you can't get the components off it is almost impossible to repair CA - sand - apply CA - sand - buff/polish. I did it once with a high end roller ball with minor damage in the center section of the cap (and the clip and cap had been epoxied on).
The other option is to see if your suppliers have any spare clickers if you damage it in disassembly which I normally do! Or bust open a clicker set then have some spare parts! There are some on here who can do this successfully and hopefully they will chime in!

I have been able to do minor repairs to the CA finish without disassembling the pen ... say a scratch, or a tiny hole/chip which is somewhere in the middle of the blank and away from the clip. I first clean as well as I can, then dob a little bit of CA on at a time to fill the scratch/hole. Then lightly sand the area until I can't see the edges of the patching CA. Then go to finer sandpaper. Finally to Novus 3 and Novus 2 polishes, just working around the repaired area.

Disassembling a click mechanism is a specialist's job ... some people can do it with the right tools (usually homemade). In fact, there was a post on here within the last few days about someone making a tool to disassemble a particular clicker. I don't remember who it was or the title, but I will try to find it.

EDIT: The post I was thinking of was this one:

LE ROI CLICK - by LORBAY - DISASSEMBLY TOOL

I don't know of a way to repair a CA finish without disassembling.

When I'm asked to repair a click pen I either start all over and make a new pen or tear out and destroy the click component and use a new kit.

I have been able to disassemble some clicks - some times.

I figure there is nothing to lose -- I put a plug of paper towling into the barrell -- compressed thickness about 1/2 to 3/4 inch. Push it in place with the closest fit transfer punch in the set and start tapping away.

I am getting a bit better -- 3 of the last 4 occasions over the last few years.

Tapping -- not whaling on it.
