Hey everyone,

I've run across some woods with sapwood, only to find out they actually aren't that rare with sapwood. What are some of the rarest woods to find with sapwood?

The rarest I've found personally is padauk, but I guess that isn't that rare.

African Blackwood Burl with Sapwood.

OK you did ask and it is around seldom. Your challenge not mine, I have it, but one pen blank only.

Have success with your choice, so far I have seen sapwood in most every timber, that will not be the rarest thing to find. Just had a thought burled Honduran Rosewood with sapwood also rare and stunning.

For a whole lot of years I cut all sapwood away from my timber for pens so in common with many people Sapwood comes and goes in and out of fashion. What changed my mind was pens like these whilst Brown Mallee Burl is available the birthing process can reveal extraordinary detail in the Sapwood.

My conclusion is Sapwood abounds but real impact often occurs in the turning phase.

Have success Peter.
