Happy mid-summer to Northern Hemispherians, and
Happy mid-winter to Southern Hemispherians!
After a 1/2 summer of music, I couldn't resist the siren song of the lathe - this time with a botanical theme.
Some may recall my simple start in quilled paper spiral pens, here:

I figured the next iteration should be quilled summer flowers, here goes - steps:
1/8" colored paper strips slit 2/3 of width cross-wise, tiny edges curved for petal detailing
Quilled with a quilling tool
Painted with mica powders mixed with acrylic polymer
Dried for 3 days
Bottoms cut off with a sharp knife
Crimped with curved nylon crimping pliers to "embrace" the acrylic-painted brass tubes, adhered with CA glue
Background built up with copper colored Pebeo Vitrail Cerne Relief Dimensional paint
Dried for 1 week
Cast at 50psi with Douglass and Sturgess PR Clear Casting Resin, cured for a week
Turned with plenty of "meat on the bone" to avoid ripping out the flowers
Finished as usual, fitted with Virage FP parts
More fun ahead in the Conservatory of Quilled Flowers.
Happy Sunday to all!
Gratefully, Bob Markison
