I use a Valspar sanding sealer in a spray can. Valspar tells me this is actually a spar varnish thined down.
Complete the barrels on the lathe as normal. Clean !
With the lathe on at turning speed, I put my left hand index finger against my thumb and lightly press against the barrel on the back side.
Spray a little finish on the barrels against your fingers and use the fingers to run it along the wood. Imediately use a cotton cloth and buff it dry. If you want give it a couple of minutes to dry and apply a second coat in the same manner.
After a couple of more minutes you can apply a wax.
Good turning and be safe
