I have the 12" Turncrafter and am very pleased with it.

The 10" version comes in either a variable speed configuration or a multi-speed (belt change only) configuration. The basic design is the same as the 12" - differences in dimensions and motor horsepower only. VS is a convenience, so I would probably opt for that version. But to be honest, the 12" version isn't that much more expensive and provides more flexibility.

They also have the "PenPal" - this is a small (1/5hp) low-end lathe that is primarily intended for pen making but that can be used for other small spindles. It's inexpensive, but the incremental price for the 10" or 12" Turncrafter models make them far more appealing to me.
