I am not sure if it happens to everyone, but it seems some pens are born for trouble. They are just "everything that can go wrong will go wrong pens" and there does not seem to be any reason for it to be so.

We were working on just such a pen as that today. First there were cracks internal to the blank, (CA to the rescue) then there was the horrible chip out, Then there was the CA finish that just didn't go on quite right. (skew and sand paper to the removal rescue) Then after sanding, CA'ing and polishing and examining .....the bright light examination. And there it was mocking us, a pin sized spot. We stared at it in disbelief.

Then my son spoke up. "Just think when we first started we would have been thrilled with a finish like this. Now that tiny spot stands out as something completely unacceptable. Can't let that out with my name on it."

Back to the routine and finally success.

Conclusions

1. There is satisfaction in beating the obstinate pen when it happens.
2. We are starting to really see our pens.
3. We are improving.
