Hi Dan,

In all my long years working/dealing with Pine woods, there has been only a handful of times where I saw Pine trees with burls, never saw them on Radiata Pine but I've seen some on other more exoctic Pine varieties.

Out of those that I saw, only once I was in the position to cut it (cut the tree) and process it, was not the best I've seen, far from it but, I know where is one, that would pleased me immensely if I ever could get my hands on it.

In fact, is here in Australia and very close to Adelaide (70km from me) and in a Council park/reserve, only 100 meters or so from the busy road and buildings. One of those building was a specialist clinic that I had to see just before the wife and I had the Carpal Tunnel operated on, nearly 2 years ago. Was a walk with the 2 dogs while waiting that made me find it, well above ground and in one on the few majestic old Stone Pine trees, that exist (planted) there.

Now, I dream about this burl and have worked its removal, all out in my head, dozens of times. I have the gear and the experience to do it and not kill the tree however, permission to do so, would never be given so, I keep dreaming, and be reminded every time someone mentions "pine burls", that's all I can do, huh...???:frown::)

Have a look at this...!

Thanks all. By the way, the wood was stabilized (not by me) as well. Which was good because I'm confident one end would have blown up otherwise. Even so there were a couple little spots that required filling.

The ca finish wasn't really optional in my mind after that. Fortunately over the stabilized wood, the ca built up fast and stayed smooth.

Wonderful looking wood and pen Dan! I've not come across any of the pine burl myself but now that I see the potential, I'll be looking for it! Job well done!

Dan, Not to hijack your thread, but wanted to show you the many different colors in this burl, just 3-4 inches away. Thats the great thing about working with burl wood.

That one dark spot in the middle is cool too.

Also, no more slims with this wood, okay? ;-p

Yeah, but it's free wood:). Hard to argue that....
