This week, we have had two emails regarding customers receiving fountain pens with the cartridge empty (and ink in the ziplock bag that enclosed the cartridge).
If you order fountain pens in the middle of the winter, it is not unheard of for the cartridges to freeze and leak. Realize the postal service flies the shipments from place to place--the cargo hold is NOT heated. So, although we have had a very mild winter in Wisconsin, your fountain pen kits have likely experienced below zero for several hours in transit. Ink is water based.
If you are selling fountain pens, you should have cartridges in stock. To be honest, most pen makers throw out the cartridge that comes with the pen, since the quality is unknown and they are less than 50 cents when buying Private Reserve.
So, order your ink cartridges in the summer and be ready to replace any that you receive in the winter---one of the cold, hard facts of life.
(GOOD news--they are in little ziplock bags, so the rest of your pen is not covered in ink!!)
FWIW,
Ed
