150 years ago, Confederate troops evacuated Richmond lighting fires as they left. The fires quickly spread destroying practically everything but the Capitol building. Today we have people running around dressed in period costume and a number of other events planned to commemerate the occasion. Where else do people celebrate getting their butts kicked and destroying their on city? We are a strange people.

Here is a pen that i posted last year showing Richmond in ruins after the great fire. Unfortunately my photography skills did not capture all of the details.

Remember the song from Lil Abner?

"When we were surrounded and faced with utter defeat, who was it who burned our crops, and left us with nuthin to eat?"
