I feel your pain on out of round pens.[:D]
I think you will like the results if you move
to turning between centers.
As far as making your own bushings, you could try
a metal lathe with accesories, and educate yourself
to operate it.Any machinist friends to help you out?
Then you will do trial and error, finding the right
fit for everything. It is a ton of fun.
That's my suggestion!
(Or you could try to find some already made,I think there
is a member here that does that.[;)])

I think a collett chuck (I use a Beall) will be much better than a morse taper type mandrel. Turning between centres is purported to be the most accurate but I haven't tried it yet.

oops - your pens look very good and I also like the purple the best

Dave,your spindle at .002 doesn't seem bad,but
that is on the outside. What's the inside look like?
that is more critical,in my opinion, since your morse taper
seats inside it.My jet mini checks less than .0005 (tenths)
inside morse taper. You have to have a good start,or connections
only get worse as you go.
The collet chuck is either garbage,or it is getting its runout
from where it seats in your headstock.Check inside of spindle.
You could try a new collet chuck, but you are still trapped
using a mandrel..This is an option, though, and many folks
are happy with a good mandrel set up.I never found mine, though.
I don't want your money,so please don't think I am just trying
to sell you stuff.[:)]
What I do want is you to turn a pen that meets your expectations,
and it sounds like turning between centers may be your ticket.
I'll send you a pm on the bushings.

The inside is even better than 2 thousands it is close to 1.5.
I am fed up with the mandrels, I have about four out there and most of my problems with them is where the live center seats into it it wears out and starts to run out of round.
Why it wears there is still a little strange to me but i guess if the mandrel is not always running at the same speed as the live center than something is gonna wear.
So what do I need to got to burning with bushings between centers.
I guess a 60 degree live and dead center and the bushings ha?
I have an "enco" catalog in front of me and will start getting some ideas.

.0015 on inside is decent, but nothing to write home about.
Your centers (or headstock and tailstock)need to line up good,
even if you are using a mandrel, and true for centers especially.
Enco is good to deal with, but not where I buy my centers from.
Yes,60 degree dead and live and bushings to get going.[8D]
PS you type faster than I do!![:D]

I had a similar problem with an adjustable mandrel from Craft Supply being out of round. After looking, my morse taper on my lathe was good (never did measure) but when I put in the mandrel without the tailstock, then end of the rod rotated in about a 1" diameter circle. I am fortunate to have a mini-metal lathe. I chucked up the mandrel and recut the surface for the collet to sit on and it improved it 100%. I still need to work on the collet as it is kinda buggered up when I wrenched the mandrel too tight, but the whole thing works great now.
