Hello all! My name is Mike Boyd and I'm from Mesquite (close to Dallas), TX. I'm new to the site, but not to turning. I have read a lot of great information posted by many of you on the site, and decided to join, even though I don't usually do the Forum thing.

I've been a professional fine woodcrafter for close to 30 years, and used to teach penturning. Now my daughter and I are getting our company, King Penz, off the ground so I can stop making high end furniture and do something we both enjoy without too much heavy lifting.

I'm happy to be here, and thanks for the acceptance!

-Mike

Welcome, Mike. We are almost neighbors as I live in South Garland. I can throw a rock that will land in Mesquite.

I got started in pencrafting using a JET Pen Lathe that used to belong to an officer in the Mesquite Police Department. Got it second hand so I don't know his name. Any chance you know him??

Welcome Mike! Great to have you here. Fine Woodworking expertise and knowledge certainly helps in pen turning.

While your experience will not need the information below, I am including some links if for nothing else just basic reading:

The first one is a very basic overview of the many aspects of getting into turning pens.
http://www.penturners.org/forum/showthread.php?t=42446

The second link has postings by different pen turners and what they wish they had known earlier:

Here is another link - a PDF on the acronyms used here. I am sure you know many but this will help with those you don't.
