I just got this piece done so I thought I would share. It's about 18" long and turned from a crotch piece. The other half exploded while turning. I wanted a matched set...
Can you guess the type of wood?

No idea what the wood is. However, from the shape of the bowl, it looks like the other one coming apart could have been experienced a bit like Odd Job's hat coming off your lathe. I'm assuming/hoping you're OK, 007! Russ

Your right. It can be pretty. When I first started turning, I turned a lot of oak. But when I started doing shows, it didn't seem to sell so I started to not like it so much. Early this year, I took a class with Andy DiPietro. The class was almost entirely about coloring wood. This was one of his coloring techniques. After sanding, you coat the piece with black dye. After a few minutes, you wipe on red dye. It's intended to make oak look like cocobolo. I think it was worth the extra steps.
