First two pics are of my son Matthew's (11 years old) first pen, turned today, 7/17/12. Made of mahogany.
Third pic is one turned from wood off an apple tree from my parents back yard. My dad taught me to turn pens and I inherited his Shopsmith when he passed away.
I hadn't turned a pen in a few years and this forum has challenged me to pick up my game a bit. I still love the look and feel of a nice smooth exotic natural pen, but have been trying to do some segmented and plastics.
I've actually got a huge piece of aspen burl that I might try to stabilize - I bet I could get a couple hundred pens out of it. So much to learn from you experts!
