My segmented pen entry that didn't make it.

Due to a family emergency I didn't get this done in time for the segmenting pen contest.

It was my second try in making a pen using a wedgie sled. The first one had 2 small blemishes and I could only hide one of them under the clip.:wink:

This one is alternating rings of cherry and maple with Padauk arranged in a spiral pattern with walnut.

The failed one was rings of maple and cherry with some thin strips of walnut. I was under a time crunch for the second one so I saved my eyesight and lost the strips of walnut.

Its the same sled I used to make a 7" yard bowl.

I made a fixed 12 segment one so it uses just a simple 30 60 90 triangle.

I also made a slanted one that I used for an ornament but when trying to make these tiny rings it was getting out of hand.

And then there is the incomplete one ... which seems to me to be a more complex segment pattern.

With regard to the completed one ... it seems that each segmented disc has 12 segments which all look to be the same size and shape.

I think they would be pie-shaped segments, with 30 degree apex angle (the angle in the center of the blank).

One thing I don't get from the photos of your sled ...

How did you cut these tiny pie-shaped segments ? ... which go to make up each segmented disc.

Or did you first make a segmented rod, with 12 longitudinal strips (pie-shaped cross-section), and then cut slices off the rod.

I would greatly appreciate knowing the details, please.

The segments were made the same as those for segmented bowls. Best place to start is here.

But you can see I use tiny segments and build the blank just like a any other segmented item.

In all the pics here the segments were made by the same sled. The segments in the cup were used for the ornament.

Here is what the angled sled can make.

It was only my second segmented glue up and I hadn't perfected getting everything lined up.

I also wanted a spiral but as a was gluing up the rings with this technique half the rings go one way half the other and I only had enough stock prepared for this.

But I haven't given out all my secrets, I'm still gunning for winning next year and getting pen #2 into the IAP collection. :biggrin:
