I turned my first pen on Saturday. My experience spindle turning is very limited. So far I have turned 2 mallets for the woodshop and now the pen. I have turned maybe 100 bowls and roughed out a few hundred blanks.

I used a nickel slimline deco from woodcraft and a scrap piece of cherry.

next in line to turn is:
black cap european pen curly maple
satin nickel european pen with hickory
platinum slimline with funky blue acrylic
platinum slimline with cocabola

Looks great! Welcome to the addiction... I mean hobby of pen turning.

I like the cherry with that kit. Even sitting next to figured woods, acrylics and burls, cherry is a fairly strong seller for me. People just seem to like it. It looks like yor next pens will be interesting too. You might want to try the slimlines before jumping into the Europeans. Getting a bit more practice will help when turning the tenon. I just went through a small stack of Curly maple blanks, and I did some Flat top streamlines, Olympias, Americans and Europeans with it. The Europeans look really nice with the Curly Maple.

Good Luck, and keep up the good work,
Dave

Thanks for the comments guys. Hopefully I will have more pens to post after the weekend.

I like the cherry but I would not say it is a manly color. I am hoping it will darken with alittle age
